Located at 596 bellevue avenue it is now open to the public as a museum. Marble house was built between 1888 and 1892 for mr. Although i enjoy guided tours i was quite happy with the audio tour we received on our visit. Rosecliff was the last mansion i visited in newport.

The breakers marble house the elms and rosecliff are partially wheelchair accessible. Scenes from several films have been shot on location at rosecliff including the great gatsby true lies amistad and 27 dresses. They gave the house its furnishings and an endowment to the preservation society in 1971.

It was a summer house or cottage as newporters called them in remembrance of the modest houses of the early 19th century. The steps height is short which allowed women to make their grand entrance without the worry of tripping over their long skirt. Marble house is currently closed to the public. It is less opulent than the breakers or the elms but spectacular in its own right.

We were also able to see a display of tiffany glass on the second floor of the house. Marble house is a gilded age mansion in newport rhode island designed as a summer cottage for alva and william kissam vanderbilt by the society architect richard morris hunt it was unparalleled in opulence for an american house when it was completed in 1892.
